TAX PARADISE
GERMANY

(35 Min., ZDF 2024)

Germany had a wealth tax for a good 100 years. After the Second World War, the country was rebuilt also with these taxes and levies. At that time, up to 100 billion euros flowed from the rich to the state every year, in today’s values. But in 1997 the wealth tax was ‘suspended’ in Germany, under strange circumstances. How did this come about? And why has nothing changed – even today? For his documentary, Hauke Wendler researches the GERMAN TAX PARADISE and discovers some surprising background information.

VOICES OF THE PRESS

„The documentary knows how to make an impression with the fact, that Germany has the means, but not the will, to reduce inequality in society. That is the most important thing.“
(Anastasia Zejneli, taz)

“The new documentary by the ZDF investigative programme ‚frontal‘ presents a profound research of the hidden world of wealth in Germany. (…) The film uncovers a decades-long campaign to abolish the wealth tax, which was supported by business lobbyists such as ‘Die Familienunternehmer‘.”
(Xhulia Likaj, Forum New Economy)
